Key Learning Areas


Religious Education

At Corpus Christi, we are working to build a fair and just world by living our school motto as the Body of Christ.

We try to live our motto by:

  • engaging in Religious Education lessons based on the Parramatta Diocesan curriculum, Sharing Our Story
  • living out Catholic values that underpin the life of the school community
  • bringing the stories of the Bible to life through play and re-enactment utilising materials and small models. This is done in K-3 Exploring Scripture.
  • attending school and grade Masses – active participation in the Liturgy
  • attending Liturgies of thanksgiving
  • leading prayer at Tuesday assemblies based on the values of the Gospel. Each class, K-6, takes turns each week.
  • gathering in prayer and reflection as a staff
  • offering student prayer in chapel each Thursday
  • praying and meditating in classes
  • raising money for various groups in need both within and outside of the Cranebrook community
  • having visual reminders of our faith within the office foyer and learning areas
  • encouraging students to plan and lead prayer on various occasions (during class and various celebrations)
  • encouraging children to work for social justice by raising awareness and campaigns for assistance for St Vincent de Paul, the Missions, East Timor and Project Compassion.

We at Corpus Christi are proud of our faith and live it each day in the way we care for each other. As the Body of Christ, we are part of God’s family and work together to live out the Gospel values such as love, forgiveness, compassion and peace.


English

Language is central to students' intellectual, social and emotional development and has an essential role in all Key Learning Areas. The learning experiences provided at Corpus Christi Primary assists students to become competent in English, and to use language effectively in a range of contexts.

Students from K-6 at Corpus Christi are actively engaged each day in literacy learning experiences involving talking, listening, reading and writing. The school ensures that students are provided with opportunities to develop their ideas, skills and understandings of English language and literature through a variety of experiences. Students also learn to interpret a range of literary and factual texts.

Each class, as part of their Literacy Block, participates in a Balanced Literacy Program (BLP), which caters to the individual learning needs of the students. The BLP consists of:

  • talking and listening
  • modelled reading
  • independent reading
  • shared reading
  • guided reading
  • readers circle
  • modelled writing
  • guided writing
  • independent writing
  • multi-literacies, including visual

Mathematics

Mathematics is an integral part of the world that we live in. Therefore, students at Corpus Christi actively participate in challenging and engaging experiences designed to develop their understanding of key concepts in Mathematics in the following areas:

  • number
  • measurement
  • patterns and algebra
  • space and geometry
  • data
  • working mathematically

As part of their online learning, students at Corpus Christi use age-appropriate Apps and websites to further their learning.


HSIE

Human Society and Its Environment is a Key Learning Area (KLA) that provides experiences that are meaningful and engaging for students to make responsible decisions about social, economic, religious, civic, and environmental issues that may affect them now or in the future.  

As a result of learning in HSIE, students should develop a sense of personal, community, national and global identity; and the knowledge, skills, and values and attitudes that will equip them to participate as responsible citizens, and maintain and improve the quality of their society and environment.

HSIE is organised into four strands:

  • Change and Continuity
  • Cultures
  • Environments
  • Social Systems and Structures

This knowledge base provides the foundation for studies of Australian and world history and geography; for social, cultural and legal, environmental and economic studies; and for citizenship education.


PDHPE

In our rapidly changing society, there is increasing community awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles and a growing recognition of the need for students to be active, responsible and informed decision-makers. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) provides students the knowledge and practical skills necessary for meeting these needs and for developing a better quality of life.

The study of PDHPE is an important area within the primary curriculum, as it is concerned with:

  • physical, social, cognitive and emotional growth
  • developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships
  • personal health choices
  • living and learning in a safe secure environment
  • adopting an active lifestyle
  • body movement and co-ordination
  • skills that enable better health and movement

Creative Arts

Creative and Practical Arts is divided into four main areas:


Visual Arts Music  Drama Dance
Making Performing  Making Performing
Appreciating Organising sound  Performing Composing

Listening  Appreciating Appreciating

Visual arts, music, drama and dance all develop creative skills and talents that promote personal expression, enjoyment, creative action, imagination, emotional response, aesthetic pleasure, and the creation of shared meanings.

Students interpret certain aspects of the world in their works, in novel, innovative and creative ways. Corpus Christi is fortunate to have specialist Creative Arts teachers to cater to these individual needs of students from K-6.

The teaching of Creative Arts also provides students with opportunities to explore social and cultural values. Corpus Christi provides students with a wide range of opportunities for students to understand our distinctive Australian culture, while also fostering awareness and appreciation of other cultural traditions.

New technologies also offer unprecedented ways for students and other audiences and viewers to interact with works. Students investigate how a wide range of technologies are suited to their artistic intentions.


Science and Technology

Science and Technology is the Key Learning Area (KLA) in which students learn about natural and made environments by investigating, designing and making, and using technology. Learning in Science and Technology draws on and contributes to learning related to the other KLAs.

Science is concerned with finding out about the world in a systematic way. It is not just a body of knowledge, but rather a process of investigation.

The aim of Science and Technology at Corpus Christi is to develop in students, their processes of investigation, designing and making, as well as their knowledge and understanding of:

  • built environments
  • information and communication
  • living things
  • physical phenomena
  • products and services
  • earth and its surroundings

Students have access to various technologies and software to support their learning across all subjects, which provide a diverse range of learning opportunities to assess, select and use a range of technologies.
